ICRC

International Committee of the Red Cross. Set up in 1863, the ICRC 's objective is to ensure protection and assistance for victims of armed conflict and internal violence. It focuses on helping "internally displaced people".

 

Identity and travel document (TIV)

This is a document issued by the Prefecture to refugees, stateless persons and type 1 subsidiary protection beneficiaries who wish to travel abroad. It states the country or countries in which the protected person is not authorised to travel (countries of exclusion ).

 

Identity document of the French Republic (TIR)

An Identity document of the French Republic (TIR) allows a child under 18 years of age, born in France to foreign parents with permission to reside lawfully in France, to travel and prove his/her identity. The person with parental authority over the child must apply for such a document and furnish a certain number of supporting documents. The TIR is issued and, where applicable, renewed or returned to the Prefecture or sub-Prefecture.

 

IGCR

The Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees ( IGCR ) is an institution that was set up during the League of Nations period in 1938, and headquartered in London. Overseen by the High Commissioner for Refugees Sir Herbert Emerson, the IGCR was tasked with resettling German and Austrian Jewish refugees having fled the Nazi regime.

 

In camera

Hearings at the National Asylum Court ( CNDA ) are public. However, the judge presiding over the formation of the Court may, on the claimant's request or if required by the circumstances, call for a hearing in private ( in camera ). In this case, the public must leave the hearing chamber.

Informal appeal

This is an administrative appeal presented to the authority that made the contested decision. With respect to asylum applications, this means that the asylum seeker sends his/her informal appeal to Ofpra by post.

IRO

The International Refugee Organisation ( IRO ) was established in December 1946 as a temporary agency. It took over the full remit of the predecessor organisations and set up an eligibility procedure. It oversaw not only the legal aspects but also resettlement of refugees and displaced persons.
